LAST DAYS OF WINTER

After all the winter rain our course is looking fabulous.

August has been a busy month at the club, and thanks to the support of our members we have had very successful events.

Our Moroccan evening on Woman's Day the 9th August was a huge success, and quite a few members have requested a repeat performance. We plan to keep this on our calendar in future months. We brought back the Curry Evening by popular demand, and received lots of praise. Thanks again to Martin Sara for his culinary attributes.

During the next few months we are going around the world with our cuisine ideas, Mexican and Greek to name a few.

We have a new staff member in the Food and Beverage department, Nancy Hayward (some of you may have met her at the Jazz evening, or other events during the month). Nancy comes with a huge amount of experience in the catering field

In Tony Louw's report there is a request from the Sports Centre to advise the club of cancellation of tee times. Please guys let us know of any changes, it's important to us to keep all our members happy, and to enable smooth running of the field, in accordance with the booking sheet. For those no shows the time slot will be billed to the responsible person, unless cancellation is advised a day before the time.

You will be receiving correspondence of our Informal Meeting of the members to nominate 2 Member Ambassadors. Please don’t forget to complete the nomination form to put forward your nominee for election. See www.atlanticbeachgolfclub.co.za

September is the start of the Rugby World Cup. We have a special evening planned for the opening game on the 7th September, and on the 14th September South Africa Versus UK we have a braai on the Legends Bar Menu, as well as competitions and prizes for those who support the game.

We look forward to seeing you at our September events, and we remain constantly dedicated to making your experience a special one.

Regards, Amanda

· Tony Louw SPORTS CENTRE

Top of the day to you all!!!

I am sure all our Members are aware there has been a lot of activity at the Club and plenty of visitors from neighboring golf courses playing over the past few weeks. Thank the good Lord for the rain as our dams are full and the course needs it badly, we have been the only Golf course in the Western Cape who has not closed its doors for play. That's why I ask please, if you book a fourball or a tee-time and you cannot fill the time please phone a day before otherwise I will be billing the entire time slot to your account. I think it's only fair to give other golfers a chance to play this great game if you cannot.

For all those who have not yet qualified for the Lexus Estate Challenge, the last time will be the 8th of September.

Rule of the Month:

Question: A player marked the position of his ball with a coin, lifted the ball and pressed down the coin with the sole of the putter. He walked to the edge of the green and then noticed that the coin had stuck to the sole of his putter. What is the ruling?

Answer: In this case, the movement of the ball-marker was directly attributable to the specific act of marking the position of the ball. Accordingly, no penalty is incurred and the ball or ball marker must be replaced. If the spot where the ball or ball marker lay is not known, it must be replaced as near as possible to where it lay not nearer the hole (rule 20-3c).

The Sport Centre Winter Clearance sale has started…. Be sure not to miss out on true quality at a bargain price!

Tony Louw

· Allen Bland GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE

Rainfall: 31 July - 27 Aug 07-66mm: Total ytd 451mm for the 2007 year.

Over and above our normal day to day maintenance routine we are currently also busy with the following projects:

Post and Rail:
Due to the rain, the program of spraying the Kikuyu out of the fynbos along the post & rail has not been able to be followed, but the program will be in full use as soon as rain eases. We are still in the process of removing all dead kikuyu from fynbos.

Greens:
All greens are in the process of being lightly top dressed and fertilised. All greens will be sprayed with heritage for fungus. The fertigation system is running, and all fertilizing during the winter months will be done via the fertigation system. Greens will also be fertilised with 18-3-18.

Tees & Fairways:
A number of the uneven tees will be laser levelled in early spring. During the winter months all tees, fairways & semi roughs will be fertilized through the fertigation system. A number of tee markers have been stolen, and we are in the process of having new tee markers made up.

Kikuyu:
The test plot to eradicate kikuyu out of the cynodon will be sprayed through the winter.

Landscape Areas:
The south side of the clubhouse behind the 18th green has been completed. The back of the 14th green, a number of silver oaks will be planted. Weather permitting areas of fynbos at no 15 and 17 we will be seeded with veld grasses.

Projects:
  • The eradicating of the kikuyu from the fynbos will be an ongoing project.
  • The reeds at the 8th tee are being thinned out to improve the visibility of the water. This will be an ongoing process.
  • A number of bunkers will be revetted the same as the bunker at no 5.
  • New ropes have been ordered, to replace the existing ropes across the fairways.

Golf Course Superintendent
