· Craig Nell CLUB MANAGER

How wonderful it is to read in the new March Edition of the Compleat Golfer Magazine that Atlantic Beach Golf Club has won the 5 Star Golfing Experience Award for the third consecutive time!

A very big thank you goes out to all our members, homeowners and staff for making this special award a reality. You stood with us through the hard times and with all your guidance and help we have been able to achieve this fantastic accolade once again. Our promise to you is that we will continue to work as hard as we do every day for that status.

Golf Operations has been extremely busy, and I congratulate Tony and his very dedicated team for making each member and visitor feel right at home. Merchandise sales have been fantastic and the brand name, Atlantic Beach, is one we can all be extremely proud of.

To Allen Bland and Mark Muller, the course is in spectacular shape. Thanks for bringing us back.

We are in the process of rolling out a new menu that will be made available in the Legends Bar and Sunset Terrace Restaurant in March, we urge all of you to come and try Martin's new creations. A lot of effort has been put into this area by the Food and Beverage team of Marc, Pieter and Kris and we look forward to seeing you soon. Our functions and events have been extremely successful with sold out member banquets more the norm than the exception. We look forward to hosting your special occasion.

We have launched a great membership program for the months of March and April just before our financial year-end. We urge you to take advantage of these specials. Bring your friends and family to join.

The Celebration Week is just around the corner and we are looking to raise triple digits this year for the SALT Charity. We have planned for the second week of May to be our Celebration Week. Three fantastic days are scheduled where we as a community and Golf Club can return a little something to our wonderful surroundings. Tournament dates are planned for Monday the 7th, Thursday the 10th and Saturday the 12th . Please keep these dates in mind and help us help our community.

We look forward to seeing you at the Club.

Craig Nell,
Club Manager

· Jimmy Martignone CLUB CAPTAIN

Hi everyone,

General
  • We're glad to announce that Atlantic Beach was again awarded a 5 Star Golfing Experience Award by the Compleat Golfer Magazine. Well done to all the staff that made this award possible.
  • I'd like to congratulate 12 year old Carlo O'Reilly on being chosen for the Western Province Junior Team. He is the first junior from Atlantic Beach to make the WP junior side. Well done Carlo, we all wish you the best of luck for an obviously great future.
  • There will be another Member Focus Group held in March. Please put your name on the lists posted up in the club if you'd like to attend.
Course Maintenance
  • I'd like to congratulate Allen Bland and his team for the magnificent condition of our course. You've performed miracles guys and we all really appreciate your efforts.
  • Mesh was added to the post and rail fence to the left of the 3rd green (this has nothing to do with the fact that my shots often go out there!!) and at the bell on the 6th fairway.
  • I'd like to remind everyone that; you get a free drop off all bark covered areas and gaps in the post and rail fence that are part of the fence - the posts are the margin of the environmentally sensitive area.
  • You can follow the course maintenance program which is posted on the notice board and is regularly updated.
Sports Centre
  • Entries for Club Champs are coming in fast and furiously. Please make sure you're name is on the draw sheet in the Sports Centre.
  • We have added Junior and Senior Divisions to this year's club champs. Please remember that only seniors that are handicapped off the GOLD (Sportsman's) Tees qualify to compete in the senior division.
  • Please remember that the rating for the Sportsman's Tees is 70 and not 68 as stated on the cards.
  • A list of all the handicaps is posted on the notice board for easy access.
  • The Saturday afternoon prize giving seems popular and is well attended. I feel it is much better to hand the winners their prizes on the day.
This is my last newsletter as I've resigned as Captain and Ambassador of the club. I'd like to thank all members for the wonderful support I had from you. I know it wasn't always possible to immediately resolve the issues raised, but I'm confident that the Ambassadors will address and resolve all issues in the future.

Happy golfing,
Jimmy Martignone

The Lighter side...
The scene is the darkest jungle in Africa. Two tigers are stalking through the jungle when the one in the rear suddenly reaches out with his tongue and licks the butt of the one in front. The lead tiger turns and says, "Hey, cut it out, alright." The other tiger says sorry and they continue on their way.

After about five minutes the rear tiger suddenly repeats his action. The front tiger turns angrily and says," I said don't do that again!" The rear tiger says "sorry" again and they continue.

After about another five minutes, the rear tiger repeats his action. The front tiger turns and says, "What is it with you, anyway? I said to stop." The rear tiger says, "I really am sorry but I just bit Manie van Rensburg and I'm just trying to get the taste out of my mouth."

Top of the day to you all!!!

I hope by now all of you have entered for your Club Championships, if not, please pick up an entry form in the Sports Centre. We are allowing golf carts for the Championship so please book your cart for the Tournament (first come first serve). Over the past few weeks I have seen a lot of activity on the range with lessons by Teddy and Francis, and maybe this explains the reason for the good scoring in the club competitions over the past few weeks. Already I see the favorites for the respective Divisions peaking at the right time to get their names on the Honors Board for 2007.

League Competitions
We have just begun our Men's Western Province 1st League and already the Atlantic Beach Team have started where they left off last year by winning the first two games convincingly. The next game is on Saturday 24th and then there's a break for six weeks before they play again. Atlantic Beach is already on top of the log, so let's hold thumbs for the boys to keep on flying the flag high.

Yours in Golf
Tony Louw.

· Allen Bland GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE

Rainfall:
26mm rain this month which brings our total to 28mm for the 2007 year.
Over and above our normal day to day maintenance routine we are currently also busy with the following projects:

Post and Rail:
Spraying the Kikuyu out of the fynbos along post & rail will be an ongoing process.

Greens:
All greens are being Verticut once a week, fertilized with 21:5:11. The elpher fertilize programme has been started again.

Tees & Fairways:
All tees will be fertilized in the next two weeks.
All fairways and semi roughs are in the process of being fertilized

Kikuyu:
We seem to be having good results so far with the test plot to spray kikuyu out of the cynodon between #10 and #18 Fairways. The 5th spray has been done on the test plot.

Landscape Areas:

The area between the clubhouse and the 10th tee is in the process of being landscaped.
The area at the crossing from No 2 green to No 3 tee has been landscaped and irrigated.

Projects:
The bunkers at No 15 green and No 3 fairway and green will be re-shaped.
An extra ball washer & sandbox has been located behind the men's front tee at no 1.
All compacted areas are in the process of being hollowtyned and fertilized
We are in the process of testing low trajectory nozzles on certain greens where we have problems with the south easter wind and so far good results have been achieved.

The Cats Tip of the month:
Tip for Club Championships:
W hen in trouble don't take chances, rather drop one shot than 4 or more.

"If you go on whether you win or lose, then you have something more than success or failure. YOU KEEP YOUR SOUL"
