A warm hello to all friends and members,
As Winter sets in and we gear ourselves for those rainy Saturday mornings,
with a warm coffee in Ocean Mist, I think of all the hard work that
waits during this coming Winter season. In, what I promise will be
the last about our extreme Summer, we learned some valuable lessons.
We have drafted a comprehensive Winter Schedule and have set the ball
rolling already. All this and more is with one thing in mind and one
thing only. We would like to present the Atlantic Beach Golf Course,
in as best a condition as possible for all players, but specially
our members that brave the conditions every time they set foot on
our wonderful Links.
Keep an eye out as per usual for our Member Theme Nights, which will
resume with The Mexican Evening, after the completion of our very
successful Celebration Week. Just over R84000 were raised and proudly
handed to Pauline De Klerk of SALT. In the next Atlantic Tide, you
will also see some wonderful pictures taken of the donation of hundreds
of Teddy's and toys.
Please allow me this opportunity to thank each and every member, friend
and donator, whether business or private, for every sent that they
have given to this wonderful cause! You really have no idea how far
this money will reach or just exactly how many children will benefit
from this. For more information about SALT, including future developments,
please do hesitate to contact them directly during office hours at:
021-557 3948 or admin@aog.co.za.
I wish you a pleasant start to Winter, may you find true value at
this great club and remember,
BE PROUD OF ATLANTIC BEACH!

Course Maintenance Report
The rainy season has arrived however with our sandy soil conditions
we are fortunate that our course is one of the best drained in Cape
Town. All weather data is tracked by our on site weather station and
the average annual rainfall for the Atlantic Beach area is also only
300mm per annum which is significantly less than in the Mother City.
Over and above our normal day to day maintenance routine we are currently
also busy with the following projects:
Pathways:
The reconstruction of the pathway from No. 3 green to No. 4 tee has
been delayed due to work on the 18th but will commence shortly.
Certain areas next to the cart paths were experiencing compaction
problems due to excess cart traffic. Removable short poles have been
installed on the fairway side of the cart path to help with traffic
management on the following holes: 3, 7, 10, 14 and 16.
Surrounds:
The re levelling of the surrounds around No. 18 expanded to include
the reshaping of the bunkers. All shaping has been completed and the
surrounds will be seeded and covered with crop cover until the seed
has germinated. The cool season grass will act as a nurse grass until
the cynodon re-establishes itself.
The Cats Tip of the month:
My Dad was a great friend of the legendary Bobby Locke and they would
often play together at Irene. When I was about 11 years old my dad
asked the old master to take a look at my swing which he agreed to
do. I was obviously very nervous and after one almighty lash which
produced a huge divot and little else, Mr. Locke said wisely “Son,
the object of the game is to move the ball and not the course”.
PLEASE FIX YOUR DIVOTS!

Top of the day to you all!
Thanks to Allen (the cat) Bland and his hard working team of golf
course workers. The course took a lot of abuse in the summer, but
all the hard work they put in is the reward we are seeing now. Course
is looking great (Thanks Blandy).
Over the last year or so there we have accumulated a fair amount of
clothing. The Team has decided to have a RED
DOT Sale; most of the clothing is being sold off at cost and
below. Unfortunately the 35% discount does not apply on sale items,
but every body is getting a fantastic opportunity to stock up the
closets with merchandise at great prices. The sale items all have
red dots on the garments to identify the specials.
Over the next few months our idea is to try making the golf shop into
a golf shop and not a clothing store. On that note new stock also
has to keep on coming in to keep up with the latest trends.
Just arrived for our winter are our winter woolies. We have a great
selection of Jerseys, fleece and windbreakers to keep that chill off
you at The Links. Come and spend those vouchers you winners!
Yours in Golf

April
2006 turned out to be a very busy month in the Club’s Member
Calendar. Club Champs was held in the beginning of the month with
Easter Lunch shortly after. Both these events, as well as the Sunday
Lunch Cavery that was held on Sunday 23rd April went very well and
a big than you to our members for their ongoing support.
On the 14th of May we had a Mother’s Day Lunch and on the 27th
of May there will be a Mexican Theme Evening in the Atlantic Room.
The Mexican evening is bound to be a lot of fun with traditional dishes
and don’t forget the tequila! See you there!
Kind Regards
