SEASON'S
GREETINGS!
Dear friends, this is the inaugural issue of our new Electronic
Monthly Newsletter. I hope that you will enjoy our efforts this
year to communicate upcoming events as well as keeping members informed
as to what has been happening at our wonderful club.
What a start to the festive season we have had! I would again like
to convey a huge thanks to my team and especially Allen, Shaun and
Jerome for their above and beyond the call of duty efforts in controlling
the Christmas Eve and Day fires that we experienced here. Thanks
guys!
In the various reports that follow, you will read up to date information
about your course and club. Some FAQ's will be answered and general
information passed on about water usage, upcoming golf maintenance
programs as well as competition results. Please take the time to
read them all and also keep an eye on our Golf Notice Board, on
which a two monthly calendar now appears, to keep you posted about
everything that is happening at Atlantic Beach Golf Club. Make a
special note of the Member Functions that will be hosted on a monthly
basis and please book well in advance as they will be very popular.
I hope that 2006 will a peaceful and prosperous year to you all
and remember, have fun, enjoy life and be proud of your club!
Kind Regards
Francois Brand

Greetings
from Lans,
Happy New Year, I am glad to see that the strong winds of the past
few weeks didn't blow our members up the West Coast and that all of
you are still playing golf.
We hosted the Ernie Els Junior Tour on the 1st and 2nd of January
2006. Amazing to see that boys and girls from all over the country
from as young as 11 years, are already playing the game off handicaps
of +1. The “Cape Doctor” tested their skill to the limit.
The winners were Jared Harvey and Fabienne Haremza. Jared finished
with a final score of 15 over par, shooting a 75 in the last round.
It is a New Year with New Fashions. Please visit
the Sport Centre to see all the new merchandise. Remember to ask for
your 35% discount if you are a VIP Buyers Club member. For those of
you that are not a member, make sure that you get all the details
next time you visit the Sport Centre.

A big Thank You to Allen and his team for doing a
great job keeping the fires out on Christmas Eve. The dry and windy
conditions made it even more difficult, but they managed to fight
the fires. Well done guys!
Start practicing for the Club Champs. It will be
played on 25 & 26 March and 1st & 2nd April 2006. Entry forms
will be available at the Sport Centre from the end of January 2006.
Keep on playing golf. It’s a game of a life time.

This summer the weather conditions have been particularly harsh with
high temperatures and a persistently strong south easterly wind blowing
for weeks on end. The high winds distort the irrigation pattern and
this has resulted in the many dry spots on the course. In order to
better manage our available irrigation water we have targeted the
tees, fairways and greens as high priority areas and reduced the irrigation
watering times for the semi rough areas. The irrigation cycle runs
over a 12 hour period from 19:00 to 07:00 and we have been averaging
1.8 million litres per night. All irrigation water is treated effluent
and is supplied by the Melkbosstrand Wastewater Treatment Works.
Our worst nightmare eventually came true on Christmas
Eve. The fire was devastating and the golf course was very lucky to
escape with minimal damage. The fire raced out of control down the
right hand side of the 14th hole fanned by gale force south easterly
winds but fortunately it only came onto the golf course in two places
where the fire brigade managed to control it fairly quickly.
The fire continued at pace, down the 13th and miraculously burnt itself
out in front of the tee. If the wind had shifted even slightly more
westerly, the fire would have come onto the golf course and we could
have been facing massive damage now.
January 2006 Maintenance Program
Over and above our day to day maintenance our program for January
is as follows:
| Greens:
Verticut, topdress and fertilise during the week of January
9th. |
| Post
and rail fence: Repair and install new catch netting. |
| Surrounds
and bunkers: Continue with our surrounds reconstruction
at holes 17 and 18. This will include the bunkers and will start
on the week of January 9th. |
| Kikuyu
eradication: We are busy testing different products
for control of kikuyu. These tests are ongoing and hopefully
we will be able to start a control program later this season.
To be most effective the product must be used in summer, when
temperatures are up and the kikuyu is actively growing. The
product's diluted in water and sprayed onto the targeted area.
For maximum effect conditions have to be calm and windless to
prevent drift. |
As you may have noticed, we were experiencing problems with the flags
blowing out of the holes. We have subsequently changed from the plastic
cups to the metal cups and are having better results. This month we
will order some new bunker rakes and refurbish the existing rakes.

Dear
members and friends, as a result of the Christmas day fire, the blowing
residue and ash, left our pool murky and dirty. My maintenance team
is working on the problem. We will also be installing a new pump in
January as well as replacing the sand in both filters. Please bare
with us for another week or two and thank you very much for being
so understanding in this regard.
The persisting South Easter played havoc with our pool cover. It will
be going in for repairs when the factory re-opens. Please be aware
that as a result of this, the pool will not be covered for some time,
but towards the end of the month, things will be back to normal.
Leisure Centre is focusing on doing more activities for the
members in the New Year and just to give you an idea:
- Little Fingers - craft lessons for the children
- Art lessons for the adults
- Well-being Through Movement classes for adults
- Kiddies’ parties/Adults parties
For any info please call Leisure Centre on 021 553 2223
Feel free to check your progress in the Heartbeat Program on the web
site.
Thanking you,
Lorraine Langley

Dear
Members
Happy New Year! May everybody have a great 2006!
December 2005 has, as tradition would have it, been very busy. We
had the Christmas Lunch on 11 December and the New Years Eve Party.
Thank you to all our members for your support during December.
As promised we are doing Fried Eggs for the buffet breakfast
at Ocean Mist. There was a slight hiccup when the griller that is
used at Ocean Mist to prepare the eggs packed up just before Christmas.
Luckily, this has now been repaired and we are back on track with
the eggs.
Our first Steak Evening was held on Saturday 7 January
and I am sure that it is bound to become as popular as the Rib, and
Pasta Evenings. For now we will be hosting Steak Evenings on Monthly
Medal Night.
Other exciting developments are the new Sunset Terrace Menu that will
be out from Wednesday 25 January 2006 and the Fish Evening on Wednesdays
as of February. The idea for the fish evenings are to get fresh line
fish in from the fish market on Wednesdays as an alternative to the
a la carte Menu. Hope to see you there.
I would also like to make use of this opportunity to thank all the
Food and Beverage Staff for their hard work over the festive season.
Guys, you made it happen. Thank you!
Kind Regards
Andre du Toit
