Greetings
friends and members,
January has come and gone and how times flies when you're having fun!
I trust that this issue will be as binding as the last and thank you
all for the literally 100's of replies that we received.
We have just passed through yet another very successful season. Rounds
have increased and more importantly, Member rounds have increased
in December as well in comparison to the same period last year. This
clearly reflects strong member satisfaction and, although we have
only started with our new marketing and communication tactics, it
is already paying dividends. As I mentioned in my previous report,
you should please look carefully at our events calendar. Plan ahead
as our Theme Nights are now being sold out 2 - 3 weeks in advance.
Watch this space as we continue to pick up speed and momentum so we
can keep all our members entertained and informed!
As I said before, it has been extremely busy on the golf front. The
busy period includes both our member usage and important tourism patronage
as well. We have focused on marketing this wonderful Golf Club of
ours and it is nice to see visitors regain trust in our country and
coming to play golf in Cape Town. Believing in the bigger picture
is important and we do our bit for local and national tourism.
The Sports Centre is now running smoothly. Keep an eye out for the
upcoming Winter ranges as well as our extremely popular sale table.
At any given day you can purchase from a 40% discount or even a "buy
1 get 1 free" discount offer. The Atlantic Beach Club Championships
are around the corner and will be held on the 25th / 26th of March
and the 1st / 2nd of April. Entry forms will be ready soon and will
be available at the Sport Centre. Please allow me this opportunity
to once again thank our dear friend Alan Shuman for his generous sponsorship
of our Extra Special Bell's Atlantic Beach Club Championships. Thanks
to all for entering our new Friday afternoon 9-hole competition sponsored
by Pilsner Urquell. These events will be running for 15 consecutive
Friday’s with a main first prize of R10 000. Members will compete
against the members of Steenberg Golf Club, Pearl Valley Country Estate
& Boschenmeer Golf Club. There will be a prize giving every Friday
at the Leisure Centre and we can expect lots of fun for the entire
family. Entrants to this competition must be 18 years and older.

Course Maintenance Report
A combination of extremely hot and windy conditions has challenged
the maintenance staff over the last few weeks. Temperatures have regularly
exceeded 30°C and, more often then not, the high temperatures
have been accompanied by near gale force South Easterly winds. All
golf courses in the area are experiencing difficulties. However, as
temperatures and wind drop, the course condition will improve for
club championships when we aim to present the golf course in the best
possible condition.
We are intending to install bigger sprinklers in certain areas which
are less susceptible to wind distortion. We have also installed additional
irrigation in three areas that have traditionally been problematic
at holes number 2 and 8. This will be ongoing as the extreme conditions
have highlighted areas in need of additional irrigation. Our program
for the reconstruction of surrounds and bunkers has been temporarily
put on hold as we want to minimize construction on the course before
club championships. The program will be continued in mid April.
Over and above our day to day maintenance, our program for February
is as follows:
Greens: Verticut, topdress and fertilise
Post and rail fence: Repair and install new catch
netting
Pathways: Reconstruct walkways at holes nr 3 and
16
Kikuyu eradication: We are still busy testing different
products for control of kikuyu. These tests are ongoing and hopefully
we will be able to start a control program later this season. To be
most effective the product must be used in summer when temperatures
are up and the kikuyu is actively growing. The products are diluted
in water and sprayed onto the targeted area. For maximum effect, conditions
have to be calm and windless to prevent drift. New cups and bunker
rakes are on order and should be in place soon. Allen

Golf Data |
Overview
of the Golf Course during the past summer
We have seen a fairly substantial shift in the weather patterns in
the Western Cape and more so just up the West Coast at Atlantic Beach,
in the last few years.
I could show you a graph of the rainfall for this summer, but it would
just be a straight line with two tiny blimps on it from October 2005
to February 2006. We have had 5mm in October 2005 and 4 mm in November
2005. Since then nothing, and the last substantial rain was in September
2005, 25mm over a few day period (21st to 24th). Prior to that the
largest rainfall during one period was 40 mm in April 2005 and the
total for the year was 350mm.
This compares with 865mm at Mowbray Golf Club, which is 50km from
Atlantic Beach. On top of the poor rainfall the wind has been extreme
this summer. It started blowing in October and has continued throughout
the summer.
Allen Bland, our superintendent, pumps a significant amount of water
at night on the golf course as well as carries out a hand watering
program syringing during the day, and the course still looks dry.
This is due to the very high evaporation during the day. At night
the wind does not subside and seems to blow even harder. This results
in the water from the sprinklers just blowing away, leaving even less
for the golf course.
Allen has started putting in mist sprayers
to these bare areas which will keep areas on pathways and around bunkers
moist, encouraging plant growth. The only good thing about the lack
of water is that the kikuyu is set back dramatically, as kikuyu is
quite a thirsty grass.
Additionally the grass is also under stress with the heat and wind
and Allen is not able to fertilize adequately and this puts even more
stress on the grass. Fortunately, February and March are periods when
the wind drops and it cools off a bit, which is ideal for good growth
and water absorption, giving the course a much needed boost. We should
start seeing a great improvement in the condition of the course. Without
the wind, the course will get more water and then the fertilizer will
kick in and we should have green tees, fairways and greens through
this late summer period.
Golf Data Maintenance will continue with the leveling of the approaches
and over seeding with rye as soon as the wind drops, but not before
the club championships. The club has budgets for these projects and
the maintenance budget for the course has been agreed upon. Golf Data
Maintenance is certain that we have enough funds for the upkeep of
the golf course. Atlantic Beach Management (Pty) Ltd (ABM)
has allocated additional and increased funds for our golf course maintenance
efforts each year since the inception of the project. This has enabled
Golf Data Maintenance to manage the course and do additional projects
as required.
Some of the projects currently underway are the leveling of the greens
approaches, the rolling down of the green side bunkers, leveling of
certain tees and the widening of certain areas of the cart paths,
to allow traffic and golf course equipment to pass.
During this winter the storage dam at the Melkbosstrand effluent plant
will be drained, cleaned and refilled. This will be done to remove
sludge build up and aquatic plant growth which has established itself
in the water. This has caused a problem with the water inlet at our
pump station, but will be rectified this winter.
Allen Bland and his team have had an extremely difficult summer, but
will endeavor to get the course back into shape as soon as it is practically
possible. I trust you as members and your guests will understand that
Atlantic Beach will always have it’s ups an downs. Golf Data
Maintenance will do our best at all times to see you have an enjoyable
experience at Atlantic Beach.
Yours faithfully,
Mark Hair
