ATLANTIC BEACH GOLF CLUB FIVE STAR GOLFING EXPERIENCE
   Jimmy Martignone CLUB CAPTAIN

Hi fellow members

I'm really proud to have been elected as club captain and will do my utmost to ensure a great golfing experience for all our CLIENTS, you the members, at Atlantic Beach.

This is a short update on the current goings on at our club.
  • Golf Data has been given the required two months notice and will no longer be responsible for the course thereafter. Course maintenance will be done in-house and Allen Bland has, in principle, agreed to come on board to head up the team.
  • We are all very aware and very concerned about the condition of greens 1, 2 and 8. The wind last summer was extremely harsh on the greens and these three have taken the worst knock. (I was asked if a putt for par counts for a sandy!!) Allen is doing his best to fight the bumpy grass (Poa) and the practise green at 10 shows that OutPace Flow, a new chemical to fight Poa and Kikuyu, seems to be the correct antidote for this ongoing war.
  • We have cut a temporary green on hole 1 as a test and will do the same on 2 and 8 should you guys approve of the idea.
  • The grass planted around 10, 16, 17 and 18 is a temporary strategy. This grass protects the newly sown Cynoden grass against the elements and acts as a nurse crop. When the Cynoden dominates again this will allow the bump-and-run shots to be played again.
  • The seed around the 18th green did not germinate the first time and this area was reseeded about a week ago. The seed has now started germinating but unfortunately the covers will unfortunately have to stay on for another couple of weeks.
  • You may have noticed that we've extended the grass verges down the faces of some bunkers, not only is more aesthetically pleasing, but it also contains the sand in the bunkers during strong winds.
  • The holes are now cut every Saturday morning , so hopefully less puts will lip out due to warn edges around the cups - thanks Allen it makes a big difference.
  • The green stakes (4, 6, 12, 13 and 16) indicate environmentally sensitive areas and must please be treated the same as post & rail fences. These stakes are more pleasing to the eye and also negates the risk of balls ricocheting of the post & rail fences back into the players.
  • The black & white stakes on the side of the fairways on holes 4, 6, 11, 13 and 14 indicate where the ball crossed, or did not cross, the post & rail fence. For example: 1. Should the ball go out on the right of the stake on 11, then the ball should be dropped where it crossed the post & rail short of the hump. Should the ball go out on the right of the stakes on holes 6, 13 and 14 and the left of the stake on hole 4, then the ball is deemed to have not crossed the fpost & rail and should therefore be played from the tee area again
  • Coming down the 9th and 18th on Saturday mornings one experiences a wonderful aroma of bacon etc. thanks to the outside breakfast served by our new in-house catering team.
I would love to know what makes our clients happy or unhappy, so please feel free to contact me on clubcaptain@atlanticbeach.co.za and let me know how we can improve our service.

Keep on golfing,

Jimmy Martignone

PS. Two women are playing golf on a sunny afternoon when one of them accidentally slices her shot into a foursome of men. To her horror, one of the men collapses in agony, both hands to his crotch.
She runs down to him, apologizing profusely, explaining that she is a physical therapist and can help ease his pain. "No, thanks. Just give me a few minutes. I'll be fine," he replies quietly, hands still between his legs.
Taking it upon herself to help the poor man, she unzips his fly and starts massaging his privates gently and with lots of care.
"Doesn't that feel better?" she asks.
"Well, yes. That's feels great," he admits, "but my thumb still really hurts."
