· Craig Nell CLUB MANAGER

Good day to you all,

Please find below the highlight for August.

Golf Maintenance
  • The temporary greens have taken shape nicely and our repair process is well under way for the front nine.
  • On the right of the eighth we have removed almost 27000 liters of water from the bedrock.
  • The high water table and underlying bedrock may be the possible reason for the front nine greens suffering. Further investigations are still currently underway.
  • The grass covering has been lifted on the 18th to reveal a lush rye fescue that is very pleasing to the eye.
  • The retaining wall has been completed around the north corner of the Clubhouse, we await the signage.
  • We have purchased a Hollow Tyne machine, which will allow us to hollow tyne the entire course from the greens to the tee boxes. This valuable piece of machinery had a price tag of R270 000.
  • We officially have the Golf Maintenance team aboard Atlantic Beach as of the 1st September 2006; we look forward to having them on the team.
Food and Beverage
  • Our Club Functions for the month of August were well attended with a sell out for our Comedy 101 night.
  • Our Monthly Medal will see live entertainment, complimentary snacks, wine sampling and a complimentary welcome drink. This Saturday, 02 September, will be no exception. Please remember to diarise this date as it is guaranteed to be full of fun.
  • Supper Club is a huge success. For the month of September we will host a cookery book launch with one of the Western Capes most famous chefs James Van Biljoen. Book now as there are limited seating available for this event.
  • Our new menu is fantastic and the Sunset Terrace is getting busier by the night. We will be launching a marketing campaign to all our homeowners shortly.
  • Join us for our Pub Lunches.
  • Don't forget to join us for our Masked Spring Ball Dinner, this is guaranteed to be a sell out event. Please call Member Service Centre for further details.
  • CLUB CANCELLATION POLICY IS IN EFFECT
Golf Operations
  • See our new stocks, arriving monthly.
  • Our new booking system through IFCA was launched on Monday 28 August, this system will streamline all our golfing needs.
  • Corporate golf days have been successfully booked for most Fridays this month.
  • Our meat prize and nearest to the pin prizes for our Thursday competitions have been beefed up quite a bit, excuse the pun.
  • Please note that all no shows for tee times will be charged for.
The Leisure Centre
  • More and more functions are being booked down at the leisure center and this area will definately become a hot spot in the future - keep it in the back of your mind for summer events.
  • Norah Venter will be starting swimming lessons at the pool for summer, please enquire with Lorraine Erasmus.
  • Don't forget the Heartbeat program, summer is around the corner and we could all do with a little less insulation.
Administration
  • Progress is being made, and every day our battle becomes a little less. At present many of our back of house operations are being solved. We have taken the liberty of placing a more detailed report on the IFCA system on our notice board in the Clubhouse.
  • Our back of house food and beverage administration will also be loaded and this will dramatically improve our cost of sales. This operation will be installed as of the 1st of September.
Security and Dress Codes
  • Our dress codes will start being enforced once again. Please ensure that your dress code is in line with the Club's requirements.
  • Whalid continues to do a super job at the front entrance. Please remember to ensure your personals are secure at all times as our season slowly starts its upward spiral.
General
  • Please note that we have posted for your information the following on the notice boards:
  • Maintenance schedule with detailed reports on the Golf Course developments.
  • List of the up and coming events at Atlantic Beach Golf Club.
  • Photographs of past events and upcoming competitions.
  • Take note of the visual display at the entrance and feel free to ask questions and place all your bookings with the Member Service Centre.
  • Our Member Ambassadors have requested that we post notices inviting members to join our focus groups on a regular basis so we can be in touch with your requirements. Should you wish to attend please submit your names on rosters posted at the handicapping computer, Legends member bar and the Change room's notice board.
  • Check our web site regularly as we will be posting information on there that will be beneficial to you.
  • Please update your e-mail address and contact details as many of our members say they do not receive our correspondence.
  • Last but not least I would like to thank our Ambassadors for the hard work, enthusiasm and dedication they have shown to Atlantic Beach in the past few months. Our aim is to improve communication, enjoy our Club and build life long relationships. With that thought in mind I bid you a fantastic spring and may the dawn of our summer season bring health, wealth and happiness.
See you soon

Course Maintenance
  • The new drainage on the 8th hole is done and is working very well, the first two days yielded a gravity flow of roughly 900 litres per hour - great job done Mark.
  • I know the temporary greens are a pain, but please bare with us. The warmer weather over the last week or so and not cutting the rested greens have already paid dividends; you can see stubbles of Cynoden coming through on some of the bare patches. To prevent compaction on these greens, "walk-behind" mowers, instead of the usual ride-on mowers, will be used on these greens as soon as they're ready for mowing.
  • The practice green in front of the clubhouse was over seeded with Rye Grass as a test - we'll keep you posted on the outcome. This might be an absolute last resort for the greens should the weather not play its part over the next two months.
  • Please be courteous and rake the bunkers properly after you've played your shot. Don't penalise the next player that ends up in there because some idiot ahead of you didn't have the courtesy to rake it properly after he played his shot.
Sports Centre
  • Remember it is Monthly Medal this Saturday, 02 September, so come and play and then join us for a complimentary meal and a drink at the prize giving.
  • Due to the ongoing discussions regarding the B-Division playing off White or Black Markers, we will have a Black Marker B-Division and a White Marker B-Division competition this Saturday. Tony will mark your vote against the Saturday's timesheet at the halfway house, and this way will determine which markers will be used in the future.
  • Steve Tripney has put in a lot of effort spot checking handicaps and has unfortunately come across major discrepancies and irregularities - disciplinary hearings will be held in the coming weeks.
  • Please make sure all scorecards are handed in at the Sport Centre, only these cards are eligible for the monthly lucky draw.
General
  • Plans, budgets and quotes are all under way for the alterations to club house and upgrading of the bar and restaurant etc. - will keep you posted as news comes through.
  • The carpet in the men's locker room was replaced and it looks great.
  • We will continue with the Member Focus Groups - please add your name to the list in the bar and help us improve your experience at Atlantic Beach.
Keep on golfing,

Jimmy Martignone
Club Captain

Lighter side……….
Ivan and Mark step up to the first tee box. Ivan says, "Hey, guess what! I got a set of golf clubs for my wife, Gail!" Mark replies enthusiastically, "What a great trade!"

One Sunday a usually happy Sheldon came home from the game very late, and much the worse for wear. Debbie greeted him at the door and demanded "Where the hell have you been and what have you been doing?" Sheldon wobbled around and slurred "Had a bad game, sort of lost everything... you had better pack some bags, I even lost you". Debbie screamed "How could you do that?", Sheldon replied "It wasn't easy, I had to miss 3 one foot putts in the last 4 holes".

Chris and Keith were put together as partners in the club tournament and met on the putting green for the first time. After introductions, Chris asked, "What's your handicap?"
"Oh, I'm a scratch golfer"
,
Keith replied.
"Really!"
exclaimed Chris, suitably impressed that he was paired up with Keith.
"Yes, I write down all my good scores and scratch out the bad ones!"

· Allen Bland GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE

GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE REPORT AUGUST 2006

Rainfall:
Another 77mm of rain fell this month which brings our total to 262mm for the year. Only an additional 38mm to go before we reach our yearly average of 300mm.

Over and above our normal day to day maintenance routine we are currently also busy with the following projects:

Surrounds:
The seed at No. 18 has now successfully germinated and is establishing well. The surrounds of No. 11 and 14 will be done next.

Pathways:
The reconstruction of the pathway from No. 3 green to No. 4 tee as well as the pathway at No 17 have now been completed.

Post and Rail:
We are currently in the process of researching a different type of fine netting to fix onto the post and rail. This will be more durable than the current netting which becomes quite brittle when exposed to the elements.

Greens:
The new hollow tyne machine has arrived, and problematic greens 1, 2, 7 and 8 will be hollow tyned during the 1st week of September. We will also be mowing these 4 greens with lighter, walk-behind mowers, which will ultimately improve their quality. All greens have been lightly top dressed and are busy with our spring fertilizer programme.

Drainage:
As you are no doubt aware we have encountered a few drainage problems this winter. The problem areas are at No. 2, 7 and 8. Shelton Drainage a specialist sports turf drainage company has been contracted to rectify the problem areas. Holes 7 and 8 have already been completed and these areas have dried out considerably. At the 8th we are currently draining in excess of 20,000 litres every 24 hours. Shelton is currently busy with the installation of drainage systems in front of, and behind, the 2nd green.

Landscape Areas:
The construction of the new retaining wall at the back of No.9 and the putting green has not been completed due to the bad weather that we have been experiencing. As soon as the builder has completed the wall, we will complete the landscaping with additional plants & bark.

Irrigation Dam:
The irrigation dam which is at the Melkbos Sewage Treatment plant will be drained, cleaned and refilled within the next month.

The Cats Tip of the month: The 8th hole is a good example of what is known as a risk and reward hole in golf design. The safe option is down the left and the risky option is over the bunker and the restio.

If you take the safe option off the tee you are faced with a longer shot to a blind green. A more adventurous tee shot on the line over the bunker will be rewarded with a much shorter shot in with the green in full view.

I was always to taught to realise my limitations and if I am not striking it that well then I go down the left, if there is a tail wind and I am hitting it well I might take a risk and try and fly the bunker. Thank goodness they have drained the left fairway because I don't seem to be hitting it well lately and I was also tired of picking my ball out the mud.

· Amanda Forknall FINANCIAL MANAGER

IFCA REPORT

IFCA is a very powerful tool, and ultimately will enhance administration practices ensuring accuracy in managing member related data. It's features include e-mailing of member statements if requested monthly as well as downloading files with member balances via SMS.

It is capable of handling all requirements such as:
  1. Debtor database
  2. Creditor database
  3. Inventory controls
  4. Financial reporting
  5. Golf booking system
  6. Point of Sale
  7. Personal detail reporting, giving us a chance to familiarise ourselves with member requirements as well as events relating to members.
The implementation is proceeding well, but as expected the technical change over was not without difficulties. There were a few teething problems at the start - one being the slow process of the migration of data from the NGN system to IFCA. However I would like to assure you that our Administration Team were dedicated to ensuring the data was checked and balanced through every process, in order to guarantee accuracy.

Some of the issues arising from the system change are detailed below:
  1. One of the issues was a reporting issue of the Member balance reflected on the member receipt being different to the actual balance. This was due to data posting, where the on line balance was not always up to date at the second the receipt was printed. We resolved this instantly, making sure the point of sale receipts were updated in a real time environment.
  2. There are still instances where the back office statement balance does not co-inside with the real time Point of sale balance. This is purely a data update process, where the data is posted to the back office after a day end procedure has been run. Most systems have a delay similar to this where the daily business transactions are only posted once the end of day reports balance. This is purely a control feature to ensure accuracy.
  3. Prepaid members are not recognised at the point of registering. This is a problem that IFCA have accommodated with the new Golf Booking module that was installed on 28th August 2006. In the meantime our Sports Centre staff have been managing the prepaid billing manually using extracted reports.
We are confident that the system will continue to assist Atlantic Beach Management Pty Ltd to stay abreast of technology, and manage all our requirements in the future.

Regards
Amanda Forknall

New range mats have now been installed on the driving range to help out during the winter months, as the growth of the grass is minimal during this period.
The rest of the range tees will be re-sodded at the start of summer so we will be able to use both surfaces over that period.

It has been noticed that range balls are being removed from the range to be used on the golf course. Please note that this is a criminal offence, and any player caught in possession of range balls will be charged accordingly and suspended from the club.

Please note dress regulations at the range – NO jeans of any sort allowed or t-shirts and open shoes.

On a lighter note, there are package prices for range buckets for those of you who like to hit balls often. However, the packages are only valid for 2 months from date of issue:
10 buckets – R180.00
20 buckets – R340.00
50 buckets – R550.00

Teddy’s Tip:
Practice with a purpose, and use the same routine that you would do on the course, and put a club down on the ground to aim with. If you are practising short games, do this before your full shots, as you will have better feel in your hands before you hit 50 full shots.

Good Golfing!
Teddy Webber

· Lorraine Langley LEISURE CENTRE

Dear Members,

As the summer is approaching us, it is important for us to remind all our old and new members of the guidelines for the Leisure Centre.
  • All members need to show their Gold Membership cards when entering the Leisure Centre. For the Leisure Centre team it is very important as they do not know who all the members are and need to see cards to confirm membership. Members without membership cards need to apply for one as you will not be allowed into the centre without your member card. You can apply with Slavena at the club house on 021 553 2223.
  • Members are more than welcome to bring guests to the Leisure Centre for an entrance fee of R12 per person. They can use all the facilities except for the members only Fitness Centre. Please also remind children, when they bring friends and do not have an entrance fee they will be turned away. Please communicate this to all in the family as it will just make it easier for all.
  • Fitness Centre and Tennis Courts may be booked a week in advance. Members need to be on time for all bookings as bookings will be forfeited if late.
  • Children under the age of 13 need to be supervised when visiting the Leisure Centre. Parents need to supervise kids in change rooms as we've had numerous problems in the past with kids messing in the change rooms, which are there for all to use.
At the moment we are busy with maintenance around the Leisure Centre to get us up and running for our summer months.

For any info on kiddies parties please contact me on 021 553 2223.

Regards,
Lorraine Leisure
